Published

This is what you need to know about the frustrating iPhone 6 Error 53 problem that users are seeing after relying on a third-party to fix the iPhone 6 or after damaging the iPhone 6 and updating to iOS 9.

If you’ve damaged your iPhone 6 or if you’ve paid for a third-party to replace your iPhone 6 home button with Touch ID, you should not update to iOS 9.

If you have an iPhone 6s and you experience a problem with the Touch ID sensor, you may also see this message since the device is already running iOS 9.

Apple’s only official statement on the issue is that the issue is real and that it is due to security for fingerprint data that relates to Touch ID.

Here is the essential information you need to know about the iPhone 6 Error 53 problems that users are reporting in increasing numbers.

What you need to know about the iPhone 6 Error 53 problem.

The iPhone Error 53 is linked to problems with Touch ID sensors on the iPhone 6 or iPhone 6s with iOS 9 or higher installed.

When you see Error 53 the iPhone will show error 53 and refuse to function. This leaves some users locked out of using the iPhone, and may leave them without access to their data.

Why Am I Seeing the iPhone Error 53 Message?

The two main reasons that you will see the iPhone Error 53 message on your device is if you pay a third-party to repair the iPhone 6 Touch ID sensor itself or the cable, or if you drop and damage the sensor or cable.

Michael Oberdick, owner of third-party repair company iOutlet explains to Gotta Be Mobile, “They are using proprietary tools to not allow us (third-party repair shops) to help people who want to use our services.” Oberdick also confirmed that some users lost access to their phone after updating or restoring due to previous accidental damage to the Touch ID button, resulting in an Error 53 message.

iOutlet has had to turn customers away because of this error, which leaves out of warranty iPhone owners facing expensive repairs.

Why is Apple Locking Me Out of My iPhone?

Apple confirms the problem to The Guardian and explains why the company locks down the iPhone with Error 53. The company states,

We protect fingerprint data using a secure enclave, which is uniquely paired to the Touch ID sensor. When iPhone is serviced by an authorised Apple service provider or Apple retail store for changes that affect the touch ID sensor, the pairing is re-validated. This check ensures the device and the iOS features related to touch ID remain secure. Without this unique pairing, a malicious touch ID sensor could be substituted, thereby gaining access to the secure enclave. When iOS detects that the pairing fails, touch ID, including Apple Pay, is disabled so the device remains secure.”

In short, the reason Apple is locking you out of the entire phone is for security sake, but it is not clear why the company could not simply disable Touch ID if the check is not passed, instead of locking people out of their iPhone. The iPhone 6 and iPhone 6s both allow users to disable Touch ID.

What to do if You see the iPhone 6 Error 53 Message

Your options are limited if you see the Error 53 on your iPhone 6. In the response to The Guardian, Apple states, “If a customer encounters an unrecoverable error 53, we recommend contacting Apple support.”

Unfortunately many users on Apple Support forums report mixed success in taking a iPhone 6 with Error 53 to Apple, and if the phone is out of warranty it is an even bigger gamble.

Apple currently lists out of warranty “Other repairs” as $329 for the iPhone 6 Plus and $299 for the iPhone 6. if you experience this error, your best bet at this point is to contact Apple.

Potential iPhone 6 Error 53 Fix

On YouTube there is a solution that claims it can help you with a iPhone 6 Error 53 fix. You need your original iPhone 6 Touch ID sensor to make this work. If you don’t have your Touch ID sensor do not attempt this.
