6 Reasons to Wait for iPad Mini 5 & 4 Reasons Not To

Its been several years since Apple updated its iPad Mini lineup, but it looks like the company might have a brand new iPad Mini 5 up its sleeve for 2019.

If you’re in the hunt for a new tablet, you’ve probably heard about Apple’s new iPad Pro. The company’s new iPad Pro models made their debut at Apple’s fall event and they bring some exciting changes to Apple’s iPad lineup.

In a bit of a twist, it looks like the 2018 iPad Pro models could be joined by another iPad model, a successor to the iPad Mini 4 that Apple launched all the way back in September, 2015.

iPad Mini rumors were fairly quiet throughout much of 2018 so that’s what makes these rumors so surprising.

iPad Mini 5 Rumors

Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo believes Apple planning to launch a brand new iPad Mini 5. A separate report from China Times, citing Apple supply chain sources, claims the company is planning to launch the device sometime this year.

According to the Indian blog MySmartPriceApple’s registered seven new iPad models in the Eurasian Economic Commission (EEC) database. They include models A2123, A2124, A2126, A2153, A2154, A2133, and A2152.

Filings at the Eurasian Economic Commission often hint at upcoming product launches so there’s a good chance at least one of these is the new iPad mini.

References to new iPads have also been discovered lurking in Apple’s upcoming iOS 12.2 update though it now looks like iOS 12.2 will come out long before the iPad mini 5 hits shelves.

Before you get too excited, Kuo seems to think the new iPad Mini will be a modest upgrade. The iPad mini 5 design will reportedly mirror the iPad mini 4’s which means you can expect the same 7.9-inch display size.

A new report claims the iPad mini 5 will be even cheaper than its predecessor, the iPad mini 4, which makes it an appealing option to those who want a new iPad but don’t want to break the bank.

That said, we know some people have waited years for Apple to deliver a new version of its iPad Mini. And with a potential launch event on the horizon, many people in the hunt for a new tablet might want to wait a few more weeks before buying a new iPad model.

In this guide we’re going to take you through the best reasons to wait for the rumored iPad Mini 5. We’re also going to take you through a few reasons to think about skipping the iPad Mini 5 and going with another model today, tomorrow, or sometime in the near future.

If you want a newer iPad model, but don't want to shell out for Apple's iPad Pro line, think about waiting for the iPad Mini 5.

Apple's new iPad Pros require a sizable investment. If Apple does release an iPad mini 5, it's going to be cheaper than the base iPad Pro model.

Apple's iPad Mini 4 only comes in one storage size, 128GB, and it still commands a $399 price point. The company's newer 9.7-inch model, which comes with Apple Pencil support and newer hardware, starts at $329 and goes up to $429.

We don't know how Apple will price the new iPad Mini 5, but a report from Bloomberg claims the device will be cheaper than the existing model.

We should also see some solid deals on the iPad Mini 4, 9.7-inch 2018 iPad, and the new iPad Pro models emerge throughout 2019 so if you don't like the current pricing, think about waiting a little bit longer.

The iPad Mini 4 (128GB) is on sale now for $250 and might even drop more on Black Friday. I haven’t heard anything about an imminent iPad Mini 5 release other than this story (I suppose a minor spec bump is possible but I think Apple is pretty much set for the Christmas shopping season with their lineup). In any case a Mini 5 would surely cost double the aforementioned sale price or perhaps $399 for a (32/64GB model). If it’s basically a processor bump without major changes then it might be a pass, but a iPad Pro-like redesign would be worth considering. If the latter I wouldn’t expect it until next year.
