With the Moto G6 release almost here it’s time to start weighing your options on whether or not you want a budget smartphone. In this guide we’ll go over everything you need to know and explain why you should, and maybe shouldn’t, wait for and buy the Moto G6.

If you’re in the market for a new smartphone you have plenty of options in 2018. Even if you’re on a tight budget, there are a few devices you’ll want to consider.

And while the Moto G6 and G6 Play are likely two of the best cheap Android phones, they aren’t your only option. You’ll also want to take a look at the Galaxy A8, OnePlus 5T, Honor 7X, or the upcoming Galaxy A6.

Moto G6 Details & Release Date Rumors

The new Moto G6 will likely have the most to offer for under $199. Moto recently confirmed both the new Moto G6 and Moto G6 Play. However, the release date is still somewhat of a mystery. And that includes the bigger Moto G6 Plus for Mexico.

With the G6 series, you’ll get a big 5.7-inch HD display that’s long and skinny like the Galaxy S9 or iPhone X. The high-end model even has dual cameras on the back. Pair that with a premium design for under $200, and you can see the appeal. In fact, it’s one of the biggest reasons you’ll want to wait for it before buying something from 2017.

So when can you get one? Well, we’re not sure yet. That said, Motorola typically releases its new phones in May or early June. We’re expecting something similar here in 2018. The company states the Moto G6 will arrive “this spring”, and we’ll update once we know more.

With these phones official and highly tempting, we’re just stuck waiting for an official release date announcement. And with that information on the way, many of you will want to hold off on buying a new phone until Motorola’s had a chance to offer the G6.

That said, there are also a few reasons why you might want to skip the budget phone and buy something else today or in the near future.

Wait If You Want the Best Software & Support

Wait If You Want the Best Software & Support

When it comes to buying a budget smartphone you have a lot of choices. However, most of those "budget" phones come with old and outdated software, never see updates, or don't have the best software and support system.

If you wait for the Moto G6, you'll get a phone running the latest Android 8.0 Oreo, and you'll know you'll get software updates for at least a year, if not another 18 months.

Budget phones from Huawei or LG have software skins and overlays that cover stock Android, just to cover Google's operating system. They typically don't offer much value.

With the Moto G6 you'll get nearly stock Android Oreo but with a few helpful additions you'll actually use and enjoy. So while you might be tempted to get a cheaper device by some of the competition, don't. While the price is one of the biggest factors when it comes to buying the Moto G series, having quality software comes in a close second.

It'll even get Android P faster than most, so that's a plus.
