Apple TV 4K: 4 Reasons to Buy & 3 Reasons to Wait

Wait If You Have Special Audio Needs

The Apple TV 4K no longer includes an optical audio output and as of now it does not support Dolby Atmos. If you require either of these you may not want to buy the Apple TV 4K.

You can buy a $42 accessory that adds a 3.5mm jack and optical audio to your Apple TV 4K if you need to get audio to a receiver or speakers without using HDMI. This could be because you use an older soundbar or receiver or because you need to plug the Apple TV 4K into your TV directly. Whatever the reason, if you need optical audio out you will need to spend $40 more to get it on your Apple TV 4K.

On the other end of the spectrum, if you have a nice home audio setup with Dolby Atmos, you cannot use it to the full potential yet. Apple did not include Atmos support when the Apple TV launched and now on tvOS 11.2 we are still waiting for Apple to add the feature. Apple said Dolby Atmos support is coming, but there is no time frame.

They may choose to add it like Microsoft did, with a special app that you need to pay for. This would let Apple avoid paying for Dolby Atmos licensing, instead passing that on to the user.
