Quietly, Microsoft achieved something with Windows 10 that it had not managed to do for the decade or so before the operating system’s release. It spent years chasing the dream of Windows tablets that were every bit as good as notebooks and desktops. The Windows 10 operating system came along and enabled its partners to build tablets that are finally competitive with what’s available from other companies. The best Windows 10 tablets easily take on rivals.

They offer things that you’re probably familiar with but in a different package. Microsoft has bet big on productivity. As such, all of them can run apps from the Windows Store or programs downloaded over the internet. You won’t get stuck with only the apps that have been updated for Microsoft’s newest operating system. Keyboards are big for productivity too, which is why many of the best Windows 10 tablets feature a keyboard at no additional charge or as an extra purchase. A few of them even have screens small enough that they qualify for access for Microsoft’s free Office Mobile offering, saving you money on Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

The Surface Pro 4 is among the best Windows 10 tablets you can buy.

What to Check for When Looking for the Best Windows 10 Tablets

You can’t find the best Windows 10 tablet for your needs if you’re unsure of what features you’re looking for. Consider this, because most of them are built for productivity, Windows 10 tablets don’t often come in a screen size smaller than 10 inches. If you’re looking to just read and watch videos, you’ll want to go with that small screen. If this device is meant to replace your existing tablet and your laptop, the tablets equipped with a bigger screen are ideal.

You’ll want to consider battery life and RAM next. The more RAM your computer has, the easier it is to multitask. Entertainment tablets don’t need a lot of RAM, but devices meant to replace your notebook need no less than 4GB of RAM to be usable.

As for battery life, Windows 10 tablets haven’t managed to beat Apple’s iPad line in that regard. Expect around 10 hours of time between charges from some of them. It’ll be less, depending on how the tablet is meant to be used.
