October Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 Update: 5 Things to Know
We know that an October Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 update is coming this week to fix some of the Black Ops 4 problems, and to bring bigger changes than Treyarch can deliver with the Game Settings Updates that rolled out so far. This is on top of the massive day one update that gamers already installed.
This is what you can expect from the October Black Ops 4 update that is coming later this week. We’ll also share some things you shouldn’t expect from this update when it arrives on PS4, PC and Xbox One.
We’ve just updated #BlackOps4 on PS4 and Xbox One with significant stability improvements across all Zombies maps, including fixes to the Easter Egg quests. PC update coming shortly. Thanks again for your patience!

This is in addition to the October 17th update that arrived with Game Settings Have Changed, which focuses on Zombies. A full change log is not available yet.
October Black Ops 4 Update Changes
This is what’s new in the October Black Ops 4 update that will arrive this week. Treyarch is focused on “key improvements and new additions to Black Ops 4.”
In the same post Treyarch states they are tracking a variety of issues. A previous post included the following topics, several of which we expect will be fixed in this new update.
-
Zombies Easter Egg Quests
-
We’re aware of some instability issues currently affecting the Easter Egg quests, and will address these in a major update coming soon. Thanks for your patience.
-
-
Multiplayer Audio
-
We’ve seen some reports of audio volumes in Multiplayer not sounding quite as expected, particularly with footsteps. We’ve passed these onto the appropriate teams for evaluation. In the meantime, please be sure to try out the different custom presets in our Audio settings under Options on consoles to find a mix that works best for you.
-
-
PC Hellion Salvo Crash
-
PC players will currently crash when equipping a weapon camo and Fast Lock attachment on the Hellion Salvo launcher. We’re fixing this in an upcoming update – in the meantime, please avoid using this camo/Attachment combination on the Hellion Salvo to prevent crashing.
-
-
Teammate Names Disappearing
-
Some players are reportedly seeing their teammates’ player names disappearing temporarily during MP matches, making it difficult to tell friend from foe. We’re investigating this as well.
-
-
Xbox One Deluxe Edition Items
-
We’re aware some users are still having trouble accessing their Shadowman and Classified content consistently on Xbox One, even after manually downloading the items. We’re continuing to investigate to see what can be done on our end to solve this.
-
It’s possible that not all of these will be fixed in the first update, but there is a good chance that some of them will be fixed with this upgrade.
When is the October Black Ops 4 Update Coming
The October Black Ops 4 update is coming this week. Treyarch confirmed this in a post on Reddit. There is no exact date, but we expect it on Thursday or Friday, with Thursday being more likely.
Expect it to arrive around 1 PM Eastern, 10 AM Pacific. If your console is set to auto download updates, it should install as soon as it is available. You may want to double check each of these days when you get home from school or work so that you don’t need to sit through an update.
October Black Ops 4 Update Size is Unknown
We don’t know how big the October Black Ops 4 update size is yet. The first update this month was over 20GB, but it’s not clear if that is the standard, or if it is just part of a massive day one update.
Make sure you have room for at least a few GB on your console if you plan for an auto update, and if you want to play it safe aim for 5-10GB of free space.
What May Miss the October Black Ops 4 Update
The Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 October update will not fix all issues with the game. When Treyarch announced the update they specifically called out four issues that are being looked at closely. These problems and issues are targeted for a future update. It’s not clear if the one this week is a future update, or if Treyarch is looking farther out.
-
Performance in Quads
-
We’re aware that some players are seeing fluctuations in network performance in Blackout Quads (particularly on Xbox One), and the team has been actively investigating. This is not an easily identifiable issue that happens for all players, and internal testing hasn’t shown it to be consistent. We’ll update everyone when we’re closer to a solution.
-
-
Disappearing Optics
-
We’ve seen some reports that the Red Dot and other Optics can sometimes temporarily disappear when aiming down sights. The team is investigating this for a fix in a future update.
-
-
Emblem Editor Issues
-
Some players have experienced unexpected behavior with the Emblem Editor, including layers that can’t be deleted, distorted images, and other issues that occur after adding several layers to the Emblem. While many players have been able to create some truly amazing Emblems already, we know it’s not an optimal experience for everyone across the board and we’re looking into it. There are a lot of moving parts here (literally) and some of these items may affect how other items perform, so please bear with us as we work on improving this experience.
-
-
Search and Destroy Custom Games
-
As we mentioned in a previous update, we’re aware of some issues specifically present in Custom Search and Destroy matches, particularly with matches ending after round 7. We’re planning to address these in an update soon.
-
There is a good chance that there are other issues that Treyarch will need to fix and work on with other updates in the coming weeks.
What’s Next for Black Ops 4 Updates
Once the first post release Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 update arrives on all consoles and PC, you can expect to see more updates soon. This is still very early in the game life cycle.
COD Points aren’t live yet, there are known problems that won’t get fixed in this update and there are still some glitches and Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 cheats that need addressed.
Typically we see a quick Game Settings update to address any issues that this update adds, or to fine tune things further. If the update arrives on Thursday it wouldn’t be a shock to see a Game Settings update land on Friday or over the weekend.
