Red Dead Online Beta: 5 Things to Know

Rockstar’s confirmed Red Dead Online, the online portion of Red Dead Redemption 2. Unfortunately, it won’t arrive when the single-player portion arrives this October.

The Red Dead Redemption 2 release date is confirmed for October 26th and that’s the first day Xbox One and PlayStation 4 owners will be able to enter Rockstar’s updated version of the wild west.

With just weeks to go, the company’s now confirmed the online component of Red Dead Redemption 2 dubbed Red Dead Online. Like GTA Online, Red Dead Online will put players into a huge game world with other players with plenty of things to do, people to see, and of course, enemies to kill.

Red Dead Online is on track to launch in 2018, but the highly anticipated mode won’t arrive on October 26th.

Red Dead Online Beta

Rockstar’s new Red Dead Online mode will launch in beta when it arrives. That means it will be unfinished and buggy across all consoles. A work in progress.

Red Dead Online will launch in beta this November.

In its announcement Rockstar says the mode will launch “initially as a public beta” and that “with most online experiences of this size and scale, there will inevitably be some turbulence at launch.”

The company says it will use the beta to improve the online mode and interact with the community as it fixes “teething problems and works to “develop Red Dead Online into something really fun and innovative.”

Red Dead Online Beta Release Date

While the single-player portion of Red Dead Redemption 2 launches in October, Red Dead Online is scheduled to launch a few weeks later in November.

Rockstar hasn’t attached an official release date to the beta, but says it will provide additional details in the future as we close in on the release.

How to Get the Red Dead Online Beta

If you want to join the Red Dead Online beta you’ll need to buy a copy of Red Dead Redemption 2.

Rockstar says access to Red Dead Online is free to anyone with a copy of Red Dead Redemption 2 on the PlayStation 4 or Xbox One.

Red Dead Online Features

We don’t have a long list of features yet, but we expect Red Dead Online to mirror GTA Online in a lot of ways.

Rockstar says Red Dead Online is the “evolution of the classic multiplayer experience in the original Red Dead Redemption, blending narrative with competitive and cooperative gameplay in fun new ways.”

The company says the gameplay from Red Dead Redemption 2 will serve as the foundation for the online mode and that “Red Dead Online will be ready to be explored alone or with friends.”

Like GTA Online, Red Dead Online will feature constant updates and adjustments as Rockstar evolves the experience over time. Grand Theft Auto 5 recently turned five years old and Rockstar is still pumping out content so expect support to last for years.

Red Dead Online Bonuses

Those planning to play Red Dead Online in November and beyond should investigate the bonuses that come with the Ultimate Edition.

The Red Dead Redemption 2 Ultimate Edition comes with two exclusive outfits for your online character, free access to the Survivor Camp Theme, a Black Chestnut Thoroughbred horse, free access to additional weapons, and rank bonuses.

4 Reasons to Pre-Order Red Dead Redemption 2 & 4 Reasons to Wait

Pre-Order If You Want to Play ASAP

Pre-Order If You Want to Play ASAP

If you loved the first Red Dead Redemption and you know you'll want to jump into new one as soon as humanly possible, you might want to just get it over with and put in a pre-order right now.

Many of you have been waiting seven plus years for a new Red Dead Redemption to arrive. While Red Dead Redemption 2 won't feature the exact same locations and characters as the first game, it will be set in the same world with tons of missions to complete, places to see, animals to hunt, and so on. It'll also include some familiar faces.

Rockstar's long development cycles are hard to sit through, but the payoff is almost always worth it and there's a very good chance Red Dead Redemption 2 will be worth the long wait.

The game will feature an extensive single-player campaign and it'll also feature a massive online component that will likely mirror Grand Theft Auto 5 Online.

Red Dead Redemption 2's online mode is called Red Dead Online and Rockstar describes it as a "new online connected experience set against the backdrop of Red Dead Redemption 2's enormous open world."

If you think you might want to start ranking up your character and banking cash the second the Red Dead Online beta goes live this fall, think about putting in a pre-order.

If you pre-order a digital copy you'll be able to pre-load the game on Friday, October 19th (12AM Eastern) and start playing right when the game comes out.

Red Dead Redemption 2 is a massive download for both the Xbox One and PlayStation 4.
