The AirPods and AirPods 2 each allow you to control different items using a double tap. You can change these in settings so that you can control play and pause, next track, previous track or Siri access. You can even turn these controls completely off if you are sick of accidentally summoning Siri.
Go to Settings -> Bluetooth -> tap on the i to the right of AirPods -> tap on the left or right AirPod. This saves the setting and you won't need to change it again. You can set this up differently on your iPhone and on your Mac, so that you have different controls based on what you are doing. Since I use one AirPod at a time regularly I set both AirPods to access Siri. You can configure it to meet your needs and easily change it if it isn't working out.
