Galaxy S7 Pie Update: 5 Reasons to Get Excited & 3 Not To

The Samsung Galaxy S7 Android Pie update is still unconfirmed and there’s a good chance the devices stay on Android Oreo. That said, there are some reasons why Galaxy S7, Galaxy S7 Edge, and Galaxy S7 Active users should feel excited about the future.

Samsung’s Android Pie update is starting to make significant progress as we push deeper into the month.

The Galaxy S9 and Galaxy Note 9 Pie updates are picking up steam and the company is now pushing upgrades to the Galaxy Note 8, Galaxy S8, Galaxy A series, and Galaxy Tab series.

The company’s also confirmed Android Pie for a long list of mid-range and lesser-known devices with release dates that stretch well into the fall.

Unfortunately, there are a bunch of names missing from Samsung’s list of Pie upgrades. Among them, the Galaxy S7, Galaxy S7 Edge, and Galaxy S7 Active, the company’s flagship Galaxy S phones from 2016.

The official Galaxy S7 Android Pie release is up in the air and odds are good these devices officially stay put on Android 8.0 Oreo.

Samsung typically keeps its phones upgraded with major software upgrades for two years before killing support. The devices are now three years old which means they’re firmly on the fence when it comes to Android Pie.

The company might not have an official Android Pie update in the works, but that doesn’t mean support for the devices will end. We’ll continue to see software updates for the aging device and there are already ways to get Android Pie and its features on board your Galaxy S7.

With that in mind we want to take you through some reasons to, and not to, get excited about the future if you’re a Galaxy S7, Galaxy S7 Edge, or Galaxy S7 Active user.

Galaxy S7 Android Pie Update Still Unlikely

Let's start with the bad news. It used to take months for Samsung to reveal its full Android roadmap. Fortunately, that changed this year with Android Pie.  Samsung's released a lengthy Android Pie update roadmap and it confirms a long list of updates coming throughout 2019. The list includes older tablets like the Galaxy Tab S3 and obscure devices like the Galaxy J4 Plus. As of right now, the Galaxy S7, Galaxy S7 Edge, and Galaxy S7 Active are missing from these roadmaps which isn't a good sign.  We did see the Galaxy S7 popup at the Wi-Fi Alliance running Android Pie though that now appears to have been a mistake.  Samsung's made strides but the company still shows an unwillingness to keep up with Apple when it comes to software support. Apple typically keeps its device upgraded with software updates for four years before dropping support. The Galaxy S7's hardware still holds up in 2019 so there's always a chance Samsung surprises us with an official release down the road.  That said, all signs point to Galaxy S7 models officially sticking around on Android Oreo while their successors move onto greener pastures.
