Samsung’s new Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ have an impressive list of specs and features. For those that want to do even more though, the company announced the Galaxy S8 Dex Dock. A neat accessory that turns an already highly capable Galaxy S8 into a desktop-like experience.

Samsung Dex stands for desktop expansion. The idea is one we’ve seen from other manufacturers in the past. First with Motorola, and more recently Microsoft Continuum. Allowing owners to dock the Galaxy S8 up to a monitor and enjoy a powerful desktop experience.

On March 29th Samsung unveiled two all-new smartphones. The bigger, better and faster Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus. Coming in with a huge 5.8 and 6.2-inch set of Infinity screens sporting almost no bezel. Both phones are powered by Android 7.0 Nougat and have features like water-resistance, microSD slots, USB Type-C and a 3.5mm headphone jack.

With the phones April 21st release date near, buyers will be looking for all types of accessories. We’ve detailed some of the best cases, some durable screen protectors, microSD cards and more. However, one of the most exciting official accessories from Samsung is the Dex Dock.

Using the large 5.8 or 6.2-inch screen to edit photos and video or browse the web is nice. But what if you could transfer all of that power into a monitor to do even more? That’s what this has to offer. Additionally Samsung partnered with companies like Microsoft and Adobe to deliver a suite of powerful tools and apps built specifically for Dex.

Better yet, the Samsung Dex dock will be available from late April and retails for $149. A small price to pay if the features and capabilities interest you. With that all said, here’s the basics on DeX and what to expect.

The DeX Dock is Required

Many Microsoft Windows phones have a similar feature with Continuum, but no dock is required. Simply get a bluetooth keyboard and use Wireless display technology to use it like a PC. The phone becomes a touchpad. That isn't the case with Samsung DeX.  To use anything Samsung Dex has to offer the dock is required, and sold separately for $149. Without it plugging the Galaxy S8 into a computer will act just as it always has. Allowing for file transfers and other things. The Dex Dock is required to enjoy the big-screen user interface and full experience.  Furthermore, you'll need some peripherals too. Like a keyboard and mouse, which both plug in via USB ports. The DeX dock has an HDMI-out port for connecting a monitor or bigger screen. Two USB ports, built-in wireless and a dedicated Ethernet port for wired internet, and a USB Type-C port. Not to mention a built-in fan to keep things running cool and fast.  There's also bluetooth connectivity for a nearly wireless experience with a keyboard or mouse, and the dock has its own power source and a USB Type-C charger to keep your phone charged while you work. Either way, you can't enjoy it without spending $150 for the dock station.
