5 Reasons to Keep Waiting for the MacBook Pro 16-inch & 2 Reasons To Sto

Should I wait for the MacBook Pro 16 release date to upgrade, or should I buy a 2019 MacBook Pro today? This is a question I’m hearing from a lot of potential buyers. As someone who needs a new computer, I’m waiting, but is it the right call for you?

The latest report indicates that Apple is still working on this model and analysts still report that production is underway. Brooke Crothers reports on Forbes that the release is uncertain. On the other end, 9to5Mac reports that Apple is holding private briefings in New York and the MacBook Pro 16 announcement could happen as soon as this week.

It is still up in the air, but we’re hopeful that you don’t need to wait for 2020. Apple still needs to announce the Mac Pro release details, and they could bundle the new MacBook Pro in with the Mac Pro.

A new render in macOS 10.15.1 shows a slightly larger MacBook Pro and a familiar Touchbar setup that may mean another round of the same keyboard, even though rumors still focus on an upgraded scissor-switch style. 9to5Mac shares the image below, which is part of the public release. We’ve yet to find any new info in macOS 10.15.2.

Now that we know more about what you can expect, we have a better idea about why you should wait for the 16-inch MacBook Pro and why you shouldn’t wait.

Your options right now are to buy a 13-inch or 15-inch MacBook Pro, both of which have been updated or a 2015 MacBook Pro. If you are looking for a larger screen, the only real options are to look at MacBook Pro alternatives or wait for the 16-inch MacBook Pro. The 17-inch MacBook Pro is too old to consider as an option.

Here are the reasons to wait for the MacBook Pro 16;

  1. Wait for a Larger Screen
  2. Wait for a New Keyboard
  3. Wait for More Power
  4. Wait for a New Design
  5. Wait for Mac Pro Release

And, here are a few reasons you shouldn’t wait;

  1. Don’t Wait if You Aren’t Ready to Spend
  2. Don’t Wait if You Need a MacBook Pro Today

MacBook Pro 16 Rumors

The MacBook Pro 16 release date is reportedly coming in 2019. Signs point to a fall release date with a new report from DigiTimes stating that Apple is taking delivery of the new model in Q4. Forbes reporting backs production and supply chain information, but the release date is uncertain.

Apple released iOS 13.2macOS 10.15.1 and AirPods Pro in October, but did not deliver a new MacBook Pro. The company still plans to start selling the Mac Pro this year. Originally announced in June, this new Mac Pro is coming this year and Apple may tie the MacBook Pro in line with announcing the release date and pricing of the Mac Pro. Apple already has FCC approval for the Mac Pro.

DigiTimes reported that the production started on a 16-inch MacBook Pro with thinner bezels, a new keyboard scissor switch and with new Intel processors in October.

Signs point to a larger screen, likely a 16-inch display. This would allow Apple to add up to an inch of diagonal screen real estate without making the MacBook Pro much bigger. If Apple is able to shrink the bezels this could still be quite portable. The screen could offer a 3,072 x 1,920 resolution. Kou suggests that Apple plans to sell this larger screen MacBook Pro in addition to the 13-inch and 15-inch models.

That same Forbes report claims the 16-inch MacBook Pro will use the Intel Coffee Lake H mobile processors that Intel announced recently and that are in the current 15-inch MacBook Pro models.

Ming-Chi Kou believes Apple is planning to announce the new MacBook Pro in Q4 with a new Scissor Mechanism for the keyboard. Apple is currently using a Butterfly switch in MacBooks that users are not happy with and that is currently part of a repair program. The icon appears to show a physical escape key.

A report from Chongdiantouspotted by MacRumors, shows a 96W power supply for the MacBook Pro 16-inch. This lines up with the 96W pass-through charging on the Apple Pro Display XDR and the source previously reported the 18W iPad Pro Charger early.

With the inclusion of a MacBook Pro 16-inch icon in the macOS Catalina beta and the icon in the public release, it still looks like we could see Apple announce the new models soon alongside Mac Pro pricing.

Wait for a Larger Screen

Wait for a Larger Screen

The MacBook Pro 16 will feature a larger screen. Rumors suggest 16-inches to 16.5-inches, but it's looking like this will only go up to 16-inches.

Apple's 15-inch MacBook Pro comes with a 15.4-inch display, so even a jump to 16-inches will offer a noticeable upgrade to screen real estate.

A report from IHS Markit suggests Apple will use a 16-inch display with a 3,072 x 1,920 resolution, while Ming-Chi Kou's reports focus on a 16 to a 16.5-inch display.

This upgrade would allow users to do more on the go and would pair up well with the Side Car feature on iPadOS 13 to deliver more screen real estate and mobile productivity.

Pair this up with the ability to use your iPad as a second display and you're going to be ready for a ton of mobile productivity.

    Thanks for this info! My older MacBook Pro was stolen last week. I’m working on a borrowed computer for now, calculating whether I can and should hold out for a new 16″. Hoping it’s available soon! Seems worth it for me.
