When you buy a Boost Mobile iPhone you can save considerably over Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile or Sprint even with a higher price for the iPhone up front. There are some trade-offs when you choose a Boost Mobile iPhone over one on a major carrier, or even a Straight Talk iPhone.

You can buy a Boost Mobile iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus, iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus, iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPhone SE or iPhone 5s. There are often promotional discounts that offer up to $240 off the price of the iPhone on Boost Mobile. Unlike buying a phone at Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile or Sprint, you cannot pay for this monthly. That means a larger up front price, but you are not tied into any payment plan other than service.

No matter which of these Boost Mobile iPhone options you buy, these facts are part of the purchase. Keep reading for the Boost Mobile iPhone facts you need to know before you buy.

Boost Mobile 4G LTE

With Boost Mobile you get 4G LTE data, which is significantly faster than 3G connectivity that some pre-paid services used to limit you to. Most pre-paid iPhone carriers now support 4G LTE. All of the Boost Mobile iPhones work with LTE. Boost Mobile users the Sprint network, so you can expect similar coverage to a Sprint plan and similar speeds.

The video above shows a 4G LTE speed comparison between the major carriers. In this video we see just how fast 4G LTE is. Before you get too excited about using 4G LTE on your Boost Mobile iPhone, keep reading for the various catches.

Boost Mobile Plan Details and Prices

In the last year Boost Mobile plans simplified to offer an entry level plan for $35 a month with limited data and an unlimited plan for $50 a month that includes calling to Mexico.

With the unlimited plan, Boost Mobile “optimizes” your streaming to a lower quality. This happens when you use music, video and gaming services on the go, but not when you are connected to WiFi. The Boost Mobile Video Optimization limits you to video streams at up to “480p+ resolution, music at up to 500kbps, streaming cloud gaming at up to 2mbps.” The rest of your browsing is at full 4G LTE speeds.

If you watch a lot of video on your iPhone 7 or iPhone 7 Plus and you want it to look the best, you may be left wanting more at these streaming resolutions.

Boost Mobile iPhone Uses Sprint’s Network

Boost Mobile iPhone owners will connect to Sprint’s network. Sprint’s 4G LTE offers less coverage than Verizon and T-Mobile and in some areas Sprint coverage is not as prevalent as the other carriers. This is a bigger issue in rural areas, so make sure you check with other people on Sprint or Boost Mobile in your city so you know if you will have a good network experience.

Boost Mobile iPhone Hotspot

You can use your Boost Mobile iPhone hotspot to connect other devices to the Internet while you are traveling or away from WiFi. This is an easy way to get your laptop or tablet online or even a portable game system, but there is a catch.

The $50 unlimited Boost Mobile plan includes support for using your iPhone as a hotspot. This includes 8GB of hotspot data, which is a good amount of hotspot data. This is almost as much as you get with some of the Unlimited plans on major carriers and should be enough for most users as long as they aren’t using it as their only internet connection for a laptop or iPad.

Boost Mobile Family Plans

You can choose a Boost Mobile family plan that lets you add up to 5 lines to a single bill and save up to $80 a month. Even with just a second line, you save $20 a month compared to getting two separate Boost Mobile plans.

This is a good deal for two lines of unlimited data with hotspot, even with the catches that come with mobile streaming services on Boost Mobile.
