Xbox One X Price Breakdown

Published

on

The Xbox One X price shocked some gamers. Others think that it’s the most affordable 4K gaming experience available. Both groups of people are wrong. Things are not that simple.

The Xbox One X is a redesigned Xbox One. It’s smaller and lighter than the console Microsoft released in 2013. Every feature from 2016’s Xbox One S is in the Xbox One X, and you can play the same games and stream videos from the same apps.

The console does things that older Xbox One consoles can’t though, and you need to factor that into your perception of the console’s price. An upgraded GPU, powerful primary processor and lots of RAM give developers the power they need to create games that fully support 4K displays and run smoothly. Microsoft says that those with a high-definition television can expect slightly better graphics. There are performance improvements too. Grand Theft Auto 5 and other titles load in less time on the Xbox One X than they do on other Xbox One consoles.

Those better visuals come at a steep cost, however. The Xbox One X price is $499. Microsoft hasn’t sold a console at that price since it introduced the original Xbox One, and it’s double the amount an Xbox One S costs today.

Depending on your situation, you may need a new television, some accessories and new games to take advantage of the Xbox One X. Use this Xbox One X price breakdown to get an accurate idea of how much you will spend just to get games with 4K visuals.

Upfront Costs of Buying an Xbox One X

First, consider your upfront Xbox One X costs. You must purchase the console and games that take advantage of it. Also, you may need a few Xbox One X accessories to continue using some of your favorite Xbox One features.

Xbox One X Price

The Xbox One X will cost $499.99 when it launches on November 7th. You get the console, a power cable, one HDMI cable and an Xbox Wireless Controller with your bundle. There’s 1TB of storage inside, and a 4K Blu-Ray drive lets you play games without fully installing them.

Compare that base price to other consoles. An Xbox One S with 1TB of storage costs $349, and the Xbox One S with 500GB of storage is just $249. You can’t play games in full 4K resolution with these consoles. However, they do have 4K video streaming apps for Netflix and Amazon Video. Sony’s PS4 Pro isn’t as powerful as the Xbox One X, but games updated for it are crisper and smoother on 4K televisions than the standard PS4. The PS4 Pro costs $399.99.

Getting a Windows PC with this much power would cost you more than $499. Factor that into your buying decision also.

Xbox One X Games

Every Xbox One game works on Xbox One X. Also, game developers can’t make a title that is only for Xbox One X. That doesn’t mean you won’t spend money on new games anyway.

Forza 7, Crackdown 3, Sea of Thieves, Star Wars Battlefront 2, Need for Speed Payback, FIFA 18, Madden 18 and Assassin’s Creed Origins are official Xbox One X Enhanced titles. You need one of these enhanced games to truly see what your new console can do on a 4K television with HDR contrast. Plan to spend $60 on one Xbox One X Enhanced game.

To bring down the cost of switching to Xbox One X, Microsoft is working with developers to update existing titles for the console. Titanfall 2, Dead Rising 4, For Honor, Ghost Recon Wildlands, Halo Wars 2, Outlast 2, Injustice 2, Gears of War 4, Rocket League, Minecraft and Fallout 4 will get free updates to add 4K video support. More than 30 games will get updates for the new console soon, Microsoft says. These free updates will save you cash as you build out your Xbox One X Enhanced games library.

Xbox One X Accessories

You need to add the costs of any essential Xbox One accessories to your overall Xbox One X price. Microsoft only includes a set of AA batteries for the matching controller inside the box and one HDMI cable to connect your console to a television set. If you’re upgrading from an Xbox One or Xbox One S, you can mostly disregard these costs. Existing Xbox One accessories work with the Xbox One X.

Expect to pay for a second Xbox One Controller before anyone else in your house can play your games with you. Every Xbox One X only comes with one. These cost $59.99 without any discounts.

The Kinect sensor lets you give the console voice commands, stream your gameplay to Twitch, play a limited number of motion games and chat without a microphone. Microsoft sells the Kinect for $99.99, and you must purchase the $39.99 Kinect Adapter for Xbox One before you can use it with your console. Skip Kinect if you aren’t into broadcasting your gameplay.

You may want to invest in a racing wheel for your driving games. Forza 7 is one of the console’s launch titles. The Thrustmaster TMX Force Feedback Racing Wheel costs $199.99

The Seagate GameDrive.

The 1TB of storage inside the Xbox One X is enough to hold your games starting out. The Seagate Game Drive for Xbox adds another TB of storage for $109.99.

Getting the Right Setup for an Xbox One X

Now that you’ve got your console, games and accessories factored into the Xbox One X price, it’s time to move on to set up costs. You need these items to get everything the console has to offer.

A 4K TV for Xbox One X

Your television must have 4K and HDR technology to get the best visuals. 4K is standard across televisions, but HDR10 isn’t. Be sure to check for that option before you make any purchases. HDR10 only enhances color, it’s not a must-have to get 4K visuals from your games.

Amazon has TVs with 4K screens and HDR technology that start around $800 and increase from there. Here are a few 4K TVs with HDR available from the site.

Xbox One X Services

Finally, add any services that you plan to use on the console to the base Xbox One X price.

You need Xbox Live Gold. It costs $9.99 a month or $59.99 a year, and it is the only way you can play your games with other people online. Xbox Live Gold also unlocks four games for you to play each month.

If your game collection is small, check out Xbox Game Pass. Xbox Game Pass works like Netflix. You get a huge library of titles to play on your Xbox One X for $9.99 a month.

Your Xbox One X Price

After you’ve established what you need, add the costs together and you have the Xbox One X price you will really pay.

Gamers upgrading from the Xbox One and Xbox One S can expect to spend $560. That price includes the base console and Xbox One X enhanced game.

Expect to pay $1,580 if you don’t have a 4K television and want the most from Xbox One X. This price includes a 55-inch LG 4K Ultra HD television, the Xbox One X and a single Xbox One game. Finding a smaller television with 4K and HDR can bring this price down a little.

Finally, you will pay $1,699.99 to get the most out of the Xbox One if you don’t have an Xbox One and a 4K TV. This price includes the 55-inch LG 4K Ultra HD television with HDR, the Xbox One X, an extra Xbox Wireless Controller and a year of Xbox Live Gold.

Use these prices to decide if the Xbox One X is worth buying.
