iPhone 7s vs iPhone 8: 5 Things You Need to Know

Apple is prepping to release three new iPhones in 2017. This is how the iPhone 7s vs iPhone 8 comparison shapes up so you know which phone will fit your needs best and what the biggest differences are.

Although unconfirmed, leaks currently focus on a brand new iPhone 8 that delivers a major change in design, screen technology and adds in upgraded cameras and Augmented Reality tracking. We’re also hearing about the iPhone 7s and iPhone 7s Plus, which are incremental upgrades to the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus.

At this point, we are comparing rumored iPhones, so some of this will change and you shouldn’t expect every rumor in July to match up with the phones that Apple shows off this fall. There is, however, enough information out there to let us make an early iPhone 7s vs iPhone 8 comparison of features, specs, price and release date.

iPhone 7s vs iPhone 8: Big Picture

Here’s a quick look at the biggest differences between the iPhone 7s, iPhone 7s Plus and iPhone 8 based on the latest leaks and rumors.

  • The iPhone 7s and iPhone 7s Plus will look a lot like the iPhone 7.
  • The iPhone 8 will look brand new and will include a big screen in a small package.
  • Expect a 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch iPhone 7 & 7 Plus.
  • The iPhone 8 screen will likely be 5.8-inches and take up the entire front of the phone.
  • Expect to pay a big premium for the iPhone 8, ad about the same price as current phones for the iPhone 7s.
  • Expect both phones to come out this fall, but the iPhone 8 will be harder to find in stock.
  • The iPhone 8 will feature a better camera, potentially including face unlock and better AR support.
  • The iPhone 7s and iPhone 8 will both run iOS 11.

Now, let’s take a closer look at how the three new iPhones compare.

iPhone 7s vs iPhone 8 Release Dates

Expect very close release dates.

Expect very close release dates.

We expect, and analysts agree, that Apple will announce three new iPhones on stage at the same time this fall. Apple typically hosts an event in early September and sells the new iPhone within a few weeks.

There is a very good chance the Apple event for the iPhone 7s and iPhone 8 is on September 6th, but nothing is set in stone. The last fall Apple event took place the Wednesday after Labor day.

Expect the iPhone 7s release date within a week and a half of the event. Apple traditionally takes pre-orders soon after the event and then sells the iPhone in stores the second Friday after the announcement.

While there is a chance the iPhone 8 release date is coming just as fast, most analysts and leaks point to a slightly longer window before the release date. Some reports suggest the iPhone 8 release date is not coming until October, and many agree that it will be hard to find in stock through the first half of 2018.

The iPhone 8, is the exciting new iPhone that will feature a wow-worthy new look this fall. The leaks and analysts point to an iPhone that is slightly bigger than the iPhone 7, but not as big as the iPhone 7 Plus. All while including a larger screen that dominates the front of the phone. Here’s how the iPhone 7s vs iPhone 8 size comparison will likely shape up.

  • iPhone 7s – 5.44 x 2.64 inches
  • iPhone 8 – 5.62 x 2.79 inches
  • iPhone 7s Plus – 6.23 x 3.07 inches

The iPhone 8 with a 5.8-inch display is smaller than the iPhone 7s Plus, which is possible by making the new iPhone screen take over the front of the phone, similar to the Galaxy S8.  You can see how these phones compare in the video below.

Count on the iPhone 7s and iPhone 7s Plus to look just like the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus. We may see Apple change up some of the color options. We don’t know if Apple will carry over the Product RED iPhone color to the iPhone 7s and iPhone 7s Plus. We’re hearing that there will be four iPhone 8 colors, including a mirror finish.

The iPhone 8 design will not include a physical home button according to most rumors, but there is not a consensus on where Touch ID will be, or whether the iPhone 8 will use Touch ID. While Apple does cut some features, like MagSafe, when introducing new phones we would need to see a major unlock replacement to get rid of Touch ID. Expect a home button on the front of the iPhone 7s and iPhone 7s Plus with Touch ID.

Don’t expect a headphone jack on any of the new iPhone models. You’ll need to connect with Lightning or use Bluetooth. We’re hearing that all three phones will get USB C support inside the iPhone, which will allow for faster charging, but it would still use the Lighting connection.

iPhone 7s vs iPhone 8 Screen Size and Tech

The iPhone 7s and iPhone 7s Plus screens will use the same technology as the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus. We’ll also see the same screen sizes. The iPhone 8 will use OLED, like the Galaxy S8, and offer the biggest iPhone screen yet. Here’s how they will compare.

  • iPhone 7s – 4.7 inches
  • iPhone 7s Plus – 5.5 inches
  • iPhone 8 – 5.8 inches

The OLED display should deliver more vivid colors to the iPhone 8 display, offer wider viewing angles and can bring better touch detection. An OLED display in the iPhone 8 may also help deliver better battery life because an OLED display uses less power than a traditional LCD. Ming-Chi Kuo suggests the iPhone 8 will deliver better battery life despite a slightly smaller battery.

iPhone 7s vs iPhone 8 Features

The iPhone 7s and iPhone 8 will offer different features as well. This is about more than just a new screen and a higher price. Expect to see some new iPhone 7s and iPhone 7s Plus features, but the iPhone 8 will be the showstopper.

When it comes to cameras, expect to see some improvements on the single camera lens that will continue to grace the back of the iPhone 7s. Expect to see a dual camera on the iPhone 7s Plus and on the iPhone 8. Barron’s reports the iPhone 8 camera system will include 3D sensors which will make augmented reality a better experience on the iPhone 8 than on other iPhones. Apple announced AR Kit for iOS 11 in early June.

Multiple reports suggest the iPhone 7s, iPhone 7s Plus and iPhone 8 will all come with wireless charging. Ming-Chi Kuo includes this in a research note and the CEO of an Apple supplier told reporters that the new iPhone would have wireless charging. You will likely need to buy a separate wireless charger for the iPhone. There’s a new sound in iOS 11 that could be used to signal the start of wireless charging.

Rumors indicate the iPhone 8 storage sizes are 64GB and 256GB. Another report suggests 128GB and 256GB, but again only two options. We haven’t heard definitive iPhone 7s storage rumors at this stage, so there is a good chance Apple will stick with three options including; 32GB. 128GB and 256GB.

iPhone 7s vs iPhone 8 Price

The iPhone 8 price is going to be one of the biggest differences, but thanks to monthly payments, you might not need to worry too much about how big the difference is, especially if you already buy a higher storage level iPhone. Given the rumors that Apple is going to only offer two storage options, we could see some changes to the iPhone 7s and iPhone 7s Plus prices, but not much.

When you break this down to the monthly price that you pay a carrier or Apple it’s going to look more like;

  • iPhone 7s price – $27 a month
  • iPhone 7s Plus Price – $32 a month
  • iPhone 8 Price – $45 a month

While these monthly prices will vary from carrier to carrier and with the iPhone Upgrade Program, they are much more palatable than paying $1,000 for the iPhone 8 up front. The iPhone 7s and iPhone7s Plus will definitely be more affordable, but if that’s your main concern you may want to start looking at iPhone 7 deals instead of waiting for the new iPhones.

iPhone 8: 5 Reasons to Wait & 4 Reasons Not To

Wait If You Want the Best iPhone Software Support

Wait If You Want the Best iPhone Software Support

If you want the best iPhone software support money can buy in 2017, you'll want to hold out for the iPhone 8.

If you're the type of person that upgrades your phone once every three years (or so), it makes sense to wait for the iPhone 8.

Apple probably won't confirm this on stage but this year's iPhone model will likely get at least four years of software support. That means four years of bug fix updates, milestone upgrades, new operating systems, and security patches.

While it might be tempting to go with a cheaper option like the iPhone 5 or iPhone 6, their software support will be coming to an end much sooner. The iPhone 5 won't get upgraded to Apple's iOS 11 update this fall and the iPhone 5s will likely lose support next year.

The iPhone 8's hardware will also ensure that the device gets all of the new features coming in the iOS 11 update and beyond.

If you love getting all of the latest features and bug fixes and value your device's security, you probably want to wait for the iPhone 8 release.

It'll feature the most robust version of iOS 11 and it'll be well-protected with security patches and bug fixes for years to come.
