Looks like the South by Southwest conference (SXSW) is ready to kick off this weekend and Steve ““Chippy†Paine and Jeff (would that be Mr.. Moriarty?) from Intel are showing off a range of MIDs and UMPCs that Jeff brought along. Steve calls it a ““disgusting array of MIDs†in terms of numbers. Check out [...]

Bloggers and users have been railing about lousy 3G connectivity for about as long as there has been 3G connectivity. Rural users are the forgotten children, high density urban dwellers suffer as well. And yet, on the surface nothing seems to ever get done. Or rather, no communication of action by the Telcos ever really [...]

A family is suing Apple afer an iPod Touch being carried in a boy’s pants pocket, supposedly caught fire. The pants and they boy’s nylon underwear were burned, and the boy received 2nd degree burns. Here’s a quote from the lawsuit:

Last week we brought you news that HP was offering an extended battery for the HP Mini 1000. But that news was tempered somewhat because the battery was listed as out of stock at the time. Well, it looks like they are in stock at the moment and available for same day shipping. The [...]

I don’t think anyone is surprised that Telcos like Sprint, AT&T, Verizon, etc.. are thought of in the same vein as used car salesmen, hedge fund managers, politicians, and spammers. Sooner or later we all have an issue with our provider of choice, and sooner or later we all find out that we have to [...]

Last week Microsoft posted a list of 36 changes we’d see in the move from the Windows 7 Beta to the Windows 7 Release Candidate. This week, Microsoft is giving us a list of 26 more changes. Last week’s list featured a number of touch enhancements. This week’s list features this one regarding multi-touch zoom:
Mac users are stuck with screen recorders that only have a fraction of the features found in Camtasia Studio, but that will change soon. TechSmith, sponsor of GottaBeMobile InkShows and podcasts, is looking for a few good geeks to beta test Camtasia Studio for Mac. Just fill out this survey and the good folks [...]
Ben from UMPC Portal is wondering how your computing life would change if all day battery life were a reality. I will be overjoyed if/when that happens. Ben wrote: Imagine this: One year ago, there was a huge battery breakthrough. All of your mobile tech gadgets have a battery that is good for an entire [...]

I’ve resisted the geek urge to Jailbreak my iPhone, but this app has me tempted. iBluetooth supposedly (I haven’t seen a hands on review yet) adds file transferring and audio to the crippled current iPhone and the developer is promising that we’ll see more in the future.

Given that the origin of Netbooks can be traced back to the One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) intiative, I think it makes evolutionary sense that Netbook marketers aim for the children’s market. Certainly Intel’s Classmate PC, and some of the things that Athena are trying take that into account.

I’m glad to see that Sumocat is continuing to draw cartoons. Like I said before it only makes sense that he does so. Here’s a panel from his latest. You’ll need to go to Sumocat’s Scribbles to check out the whole thing.

As if the Apple rumors about touch tablets, Netbooks, etc… weren’t rampant enough, now comes this. Apple is apparently notifiying folks that on March 17 they will preview the iPhone 3.0 software. That doesn’t mean it will be out then, and specualtion is running towards this summer. Several things are in play here.

Asus has been the leader of everything Netbook since day one, so it will be interesting to see what this might mean, if it means anything, in the follow-the-leader mobile computing space. DigiTimes is reporting that in order to save on administrative costs, Asus is considering merging its Netbook and Notebook divisions.

Those in Japan get it early, but word is that the Dell Studio One all-in-one is headed stateside later this spring at a price starting at $700. This touch-screen all-in-one sure looks pretty, and it appears to pack a punch, but there’s a catch. The touch-screen, like some of the other options are add ons [...]

Let’s just call Mark Spoonauer of Laptop Mag not a fan of the Samsung Q1EX UMPC. He’s reviewed the new Samsung Q1EX UMPC, (that features a VIA processor) and well, to be kind finds it lacking. On the one hand I can’t say I’m surprised. All of us here at GBM cocked our eyebrows [...]

Just in time for the Easter season, Google has brought Grand Central back from the seemingly dead as Google Voice. If you aren’t familiar with Grand Central, that service (bought by Google awhile back) allowed users to use one Grand Central phone number to handle calls from the many phone numbers that we all [...]

Johannes of EeePC.de ran some battery tests on the MSI Wind U115 with surprising results. MSI claims the U115 will keep ticking for about 10.5 hours, but he was able to stretch it out to an even 15 hours by dimming the display to 30% and enabling the netbook’s solid state disk. At full brightness [...]

Well, you can’t say that InPlay Technologies has not put up a good fight. Over the past several years, InPlay has reorganized, refocused, and retooled, only to finally be met with an economic situation that is wreaking havoc on a number of companies. Sadly, today there is one less digitizer company to challenge the likes [...]

Xavier and Warner pick each other’s brains on topics ranging from all the rumors about Apple unleashing a Netbook, to [...]

Sometimes the simplest accessories can have a big impact on your mobile computing life. Jason Dunn from Digita Home Thoughts found a short power cable that works with most netbook AC adapters. This means he can ditch the bulk of his adapter’s cord at home when he needs to travel light. Jason uses his new-found [...]

3D is becoming a buzz word these days as we’re seeing it crop up more and more. Recently Mitsubishi demoed a 3D capacitive touch screen that they plan on introducing in some future devices. What’s really intriguing about this is that it can detect a finger moving towards the screen. You know, like hover [...]

Our friends at Laptop Mag sent us a heads up on this report and boy, if this is true, it sure is depressing. Quoting some former Office Depot workers, it appears that floor associates would tell a customer that the Laptop they were interested in purchasing was out of stock, if that customer wasn’t interested [...]

The headline here has a dose of hyperbole so don’t work yourself into a phobia. ABC News has put out a report on Seven Surprising Ways that Cell Phones Can Affect Your Health. No, the on again/off again fear of radiation next to your brain is not one of them. But the seven things listed [...]

This Asus promotional video is trumpeting the vaunted Eee PC and what you can do with all day battery life. I guess this pleasant country setting, replete with farm animals, is meant for Europe where 3G coverage in the country is supposed to be better than it is here in the Good Ole USA. Actually, [...]
