jkOnTheRun reader Hector Gomez likes the Viliv S5 UMPC, like most who have gotten their hands on one. He likes it so much that he’s installed Windows XP Tablet PC Edition on it. Note that you can’t purchase this edition, but that didn’t stop Hector. As you can see from the video, not only did [...]

In addition to evaluating the Lenovo S10-2, I’m also evaluating a Lenovo S12. Like Xavier, I’m hesitant to call the S12 a netbook as it is essentially a 12″ notebook that runs the Intel Atom N270 processor. However, it is just as portable and a wonderful mobile device. The timing is good as I’m also [...]

I’m working with my son Dax, helping him with his cycling merit badge for Boy Scouts. We’ve got six rides under out belt so far and have had a blast. It is an awesome father / son activity. We rode our second 25 mile ride today, and will finish up with a 50 miler [...]

My mother sent me photos of her new phone, decked out with stickers from HOTSUMA Online Shop, a Japanese retailer of lacquer-style decals. The decals are cut so as to appear painted straight on to the surface. She also decorated her Nintendo DS (which she insists is my sister’s; top right), and my sister got [...]

Apple’s App Store celebrates one year of being in business today. It has certainly been quite a year. Over 56,000 apps and over a billion downloads is nothing to sneeze at. As I said when the App Store and the SDK were announced this “game over” post, Apple spurred changes in the mobile market that [...]

Drat. Turns out the USB chainsaw I linked to the other day is not real. Instead it is a promotional idea that seeks to call attention to the wastefulness of printers. The site has now changed into the Papercut site and instead of ordering a USB chainsaw, you can download a program that makes the [...]

A Lenovo IdeaPad S12 showed up today and I’ve spent the past few hours using it. The IdeaPad S12 has a lot in common with the IdeaPad S10, but I have trouble calling this thing a “netbook” because of its larger dimmensions. I got to take a quick look at the IdeaPad S12 back in [...]

Sumocat pointed out some mobile photo setups earlier this week, which inspired me to shoot a quick video of my new mobile photo studio. I’ve been using my Viliv S5 quite a bit over the past month and keep it stashed in my camera bag. The touchscreen makes it incredibly easy to edit photos with [...]

The Nokia N97 is getting some love and some derision from various quarters. jkkmobile is giving it a once over and has posted up some video and pictures of his early impressions. As usual, his insights are priceless. Check out more video on jkkmobile.
Today Cradlepoint’s announcing that a firware update will make its wireless routers’ compatible with Novatel’s MiFi cards. I use a MiFi 2200 that I bought from Sprint and have been very pleased with it so far, but Cradlepoint’s routers are much more robust that the MiFi. ““Customers can increase the range of their Wiâ€ÂFi signal, [...]

Perhaps you remember my previous review of Eltima SyncMate, the software solution for syncing your Mac and Windows Mobile device. Our friends from Eltima Software are preparing to release a new version, but before they do, they’d like to offer GottaBeMobile readers an opportunity to win a few licenses for version 1.4! Mark it on your calendars: July 15th is the day the Eee PC T91 is scheduled for release. Apparently in response to confusion caused by a premature product listing on BuyDig, ASUS sent out the word via Twitter, perhaps to clear the way for pre-ordering, not to mention generate some buzz. Got your credit cards [...]

You’ve all been waiting for it and here it is – a head to head video review between Motion Computing’s J3400 Tablet PC and Fujitsu’s ST6012 Tablet PC. This has to be the most indepth head to head review I’ve ever done, as I compare pens, batteries, ports, screens, bezels, how to hold the tablet [...]

We get a lot of gadgets and computers to review here at GottaBeMobile, but there is nothing like getting to play (er, I mean work) with a slate Tablet PC. Even though they don’t fit my particular work flow, I love the simplicity that a slate brings to the table. In this InkShow video review, [...]

You didn’t think Asus was done with touch screens now that the Eee T91 is starting to move out the door did you? Just as it looks like retailers might be starting to sell the single touch version of Asus EEE PC T91 Tablet (some stock issues cropping up, and possibly over eager web p [...]

Former blogger, now Lifestreamer, Steve Rubel has posted is list of Five Gadgets for the Social Technology Addicted. Netbooks, the Verizon MiFi card, and three others make his list including Posterous (which isn’t a gadget) the service he is now using for his Lifestream. Notice the small and mobile size of his top five, which [...]

Forget heading to the cineplex for some summer action movie thrills. All you have to do is check out Microsoft Office 2010: The Movie. This is hysterical fun and shows off a surprising good sense of humor. Microsoft’s Office 2010: The Movie trailer not only is filled with a clever batch of action movie cliches [...]
Looking to get on the winner’s side of the Google Chrome OS news, two makers of instant-on operating systems, Splashtop and HyperSpace, respectively, have released statements emphasizing the benefits of quicking booting systems, which have been validated by Google’s announcement, and reminding us that they already deliver these benefits to the market. It’s a smart [...]

Thanks to Portable Monkey for pointing this out. The regular touch (not multi-touch) Asus Eee PC T91 Tablet is now on sale at BuyDig for $499. It is listed as in stock and ready to grab. UPDATE: Looks BuyDig is changing from In Stock to Out of Stock, and Amazon now has it listed [...]
More info on Google Chrome OS is trickling out of the official blog, including an early FAQ that lists the companies currently onboard to support the effort. They include Acer, Adobe, ASUS, Freescale, Hewlett-Packard, Lenovo, Qualcomm, and Texas Instruments. Quite a telling group of partners. HP and Acer are the top PC makers, and ASUS [...]

When major events unfold, and Google’s Chrome OS announcement certainly qualifies, I like to take a look at who stands to gain and who stands to lose, both to get a feel for how the event affects the future and how others could react. So who reaps the rewards in this and who gets hit [...]
Buydig is offering the ASUS Eee PC 1005HA ‘Seashell’ netbook for $379.95 after a $10 discount. This price includes a free 2GB memory upgrade and free shipping. Visit LogicBuy for details and more great deals.

You can’t say this was unexpected, but it looks like Amazon has dropped the price of the Kindle 2 from $359 to $299. This isn’t the newer and larger Kindle DX, but the 2nd generation of the Kindle. That price makes it almost worth me making the jump. But not quite.

It looks like Motion Computing’s LE1700 days are numbered, which is unfortunate because the nice tapered design was always one of my favorites. A newsletter was just sent out saying that the LE1700 would only available while supplies last, which means they are not making any more. If interested, contact a reseller today for $100 [...]

The great thing about Tablet PCs is the flexibility it offers in getting work done. From managing to-do lists, signing PDFs, or tracking projects, a Tablet PC plus the right software solution, can bring immediate benefits to any business. Checkout this case study from Bluebeam on how one of their customers uses Bluebeam and a [...]

Rob posted last night about Google’s announcement of the Chrome Operating System. Sometimes change sneaks up on you. Sometimes it comes with a loud bang. The sound you hear is the world changing course. Right now. Cue the loud bang. The timing might have seemed odd to some. Robert Scoble says that Google’s announcement [...]
Wow. We’ve all been speculating about a Google OS for years and, today, the veil has been lifted on Google Chrome OS, which is initially being targeted for netbooks. You definitely want to head over to the Google Blog and read the details. Look for more updates from Google in the fall, as well as [...]

Good news – Lenovo’s improved S10-2 Netbook is shipping and Lenovo was kind enough to send me a production ready machine to play with for a few months. Xavier gave us a really quick hands on when the S10-2 was announced, but this will be our first time to get extended play time with it. [...]

According to reports, Pandora fans can breathe a sigh of release as it looks like the Internet radio service can keep on bringing the tunes. Pandora and other Internet radio outlets had been threatened by large royalty increase that put the cost of doing business basically out of reach. But it looks like negotiations have [...]

Good news, everyone! Your arduous testing and re-testing and testing again of Google’s Gmail, Docs, Calendar and Talk services have finally paid off. Google has finally moved them out of beta testing, as signified by the “beta” label being removed from their logos. Otherwise, the products are completely unchanged. Nada. Zip. Same service, no “beta” [...]

I’ve seen some strange USB powered gadgets in my time, but I never thought I’d see a USB powered chain saw. Yep. You read that right. The folks behind the iSaw promise a chain saw powered by a USB 2.0 port on your laptop. I have to admit there are moments in my day when [...]

The little mobile companions we’ve come to know as Netbooks have been declared dead, brought back to life, had a funeral, and been resurrected yet again. Whether you love or hate them, the Netbook is pulling a Frankenstein when it comes to dying and coming back to life. Let’s look back to January of this [...]

This has some very interesting potential for those who are hearing impaired. soundAMP (iTunes link) is an iPhone app that bills itself as the “first assistive application that turns your iPhone or iPod Touch into an interactive hearing device.” Essentially you plug in your headphones that include a microphone fire up the app and you [...]

Is Viliv the new Asus? It is probably way to early to ask and answer that question, and you still have to go through an importer like Dynamism to get their products here in the states. That said, Viliv keeps cranking out new UMPC versions. They’ve now added the Viliv S7 Convertible to the lineup [...]
