The Zipcar iPhone application is now available from Apple’s App Store. The application lets Zipcar customers rent cars by the hour and do a couple of other cool tricks. Tapping on the iPhone’s screen can unlock your rental car or honk its horn in case you lose track of it in a parking lot. . [...]

I like Acronis products a lot and use them on my Windows PCs for backup and recovery (you do have a backup solution don’t you?). Acronis has just released True Image Home Netbook Edition 2010, which is supposedly tailored just for Netbooks. I have not tried this out, and I’m not tremendously sure as to [...]

I’m working at a Starbucks in Cupertino before heading over to an NVIDIA conference this afternoon. I noticed a gentleman next to me inking on a Samsung Q1 Ultra next to me and struck up a conversation about the device and how he liked it. Art picked up the Q1 Ultra because he’s learning Mandarin. [...]

This is quite a handy app for the iPhone. Eye Glasses allows you to use your camera to view fine or small print as if you were using a magnifying glass. I’m sure it will come in handy for those with deteriorating vision, as well as anyone like myself who is in denial about the [...]

Gizmodo is running a piece quoting various unnamed sources from some named companies saying that Apple had approached them about “putting paper on a ‘new device.’” The companies range from the New York Times to McGraw Hill and Oberlin Press. As the Apple, and now Microsoft Tablet, rumors heat up to white hot speculation, I [...]

This post touches two ares of my life: mobile tech and live theatre. There’s a video (below the jump) of a performance by Hugh Jackman and Daniel Craig that was interrupted by a cellphone going off. Jackman precedes to stop the show and ask the audience member if they are going to answer the phone. [...]

We’re starting to see hands on pictures of the HP Envy 13, along with FCC docs and I find the vaunted Envy name to be quite ironic. Simply put, the Envy looks like someone has some serious MacBook envy going on and just decided to create a mirror image of that look. And speaking of [...]

It looks like Tablets might (I emphasize might) see a surge similar to Netbooks based on the fact that multiple manufacturers are prepping and releasing devices that they or others call Tablets. It’s just my opinion but I wouldn’t expect that surge to have the same disruptive effect that Netbooks did. What I do sense [...]

Gizmodo as posted another video of the Courier Tablet from Microsoft that shows more concepts of how you would interact with this new device. Again, thinking of Ken Hinkley’s influences here the core metaphor seems to be an InkSeine like infinite journal that you can create and store data in. In this video the pen [...]

Dell is getting into the wireless charging and wireless connectivity business with the release of the Latitude Z. The Z comes with a magnetic inductive stand that works with the power coils in the base of the notebook to charge the device up, supposedly in the same amount of time as it would if the [...]
Interesting. Amidst all of the Apple Tablet rumors, Apple potentially poured more fuel on that fire by rehiring Michael Tchao, one of the original developers of the Newton. Tchao’s new position will be as a Vice President of product marketing. Of course speculation is rampant that he’s been brought on to help market the Apple [...]
Microsoft’s somewhat controversial (at least in security software makers’ minds) free security software is scheduled to launch some time today. The Security Essentials package will be available for a download at some point later this morning. Security Essentials replaces Microsoft’s Windows Live OneCare. Microsoft is pitching this as a basic package to protect against malware [...]

I have been using Moblin version 2 on my Dell Mini 10v netbook exclusively for the past couple days. The linux variant is specifically tailored for a netbook’s smaller screen size, longer battery life, and Intel Atom Processor. While the overall OS is smooth and offers much, I must offer a few suggestions.

We got a sneak peak of an Intel Atom powered slate device last week at IDF 2009. The multi-touch Hanvon slate felt pretty solid thanks to its Aluminum shell. There weren’t any specs or detailed descriptions of the device at the show, but I was told it’d be available in China in Q4. There’s no [...]

Keep in mind I was on the record very early saying that Apple’s App Store was going to be a big game changer. That bit of history refreshed, I wish I had the temerity to play with numbers in my business the way Apple does with its App Store. Today Apple is trumpeting that it [...]

Verizon is offering the Gateway LT2016U Netbook at a subsidized price. If it looks familiar to Acer Netbook fans that’s because it is essentially the Acer Aspire One D250. Remember Acer bought Gateway awhile back. Prices vary depending on how you want to play the subsidized game (or not.) If you want the Netbook outright [...]
TGDaily is reporting that Microsoft has apparently changed its tune on Windows 7 restrictions for Netbooks. Apparently OEMs and ODMs are now free to install any SKU of Windows 7 on Netbooks, and not limited to Windows 7 Starter. This also means that the three app limitation no longer exists. This doesn’t mean that OEMs [...]

John Biggs at CrunchGear puts out a piece on The Coming Tablet Wars that’s worth a read. He’s pumping his boss’s CrunchPad saying “When all the bugs are worked out, it will be an amazing device,” and taking a look at the other offerings and rumors from Apple, Microsoft, Archos, and Creative. He points out, [...]

Stephen Fry is just one of those writers I love reading. I also admire him greatly as an actor. He blogs a bit and Twitters a bit and it is always a delight for me when I see something pop up in my feeds or on Twitter. He’s just out with the first of what [...]

Geeks love new gear. Mostly we talk about new notebooks, netbooks, phones, Tablets, yada, yada, yada; and everyone loves when a new package is headed for delivery. But what about the gear that supports our geeky habits. I’m talking about the investment we make in things like external drives for backup (you do backup don’t [...]

Michael Arrington of TechCrunch sat down with Steve Ballmer and talked about some of Microsoft’s future plans regarding The Cloud, Azure, Mobile Phones, enterprise technology, search, and more. Obviously you don’t get a lot of specifics, but you do get some good insight to the big picture strategy that drives Microsoft. Well worth watching. (There’s [...]
HP’s offering the Pavilion dv3t after for $649.98 after a $150 instant discount and a $100 coupon. At this price the dv3t comes with 3GB of RAM, 2.1GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, 320GB hard drive and a free printer. Visit LogicBuy for more details and the coupon code.

A bit of news that caught us off-guard today: a new version of that “memory drawer” Evernote is available for beta testing. Caught us by surprise because news broke via CNET before anyone else posted it, including the Evernote Blogcast. Any other week, a company blog not getting out first word of their product would [...]

Phoenix Technologies had a demo of a new BIOS at IDF 2009 that gives a glimpse into the future of starting up your PC. I’ve never seen a Windows PC go from off to start menu so fast. PC manufacturers will of course have to pay a premium for something like this and they may [...]

In the crazy world of mobile tech things are getting even crazier it seems as we see new product announcements and rumors of what’s to come. The Age of the Netbook shifted the playing field when it came to mobile device. The iPhone led to another tectonic shift, and now if Tablet rumors are to [...]

The long knives are out criticizing Microsoft’s Windows 7 Launch Party concept, and while some of the criticism is justified, I think most of the snark is missing the point. On its surface the idea looks pretty silly to me, but I don’t think Microsoft is trying to speak to me here. I think Microsoft [...]

More than a week after tipping their hand, Wacom today officially unveiled their new and refreshed line of Bamboo tablets featuring multi-touch input. The line breaks out into five tablets: one pen-only, one touch-only, and three with pen + touch.

Sumocat blogged about TabletKiosk’s TufTab earlier today, providing specs and an overview of it. I just got a chance to get my hands on one at IDF 2009 and recorded a quick video of it with Intel’s Steve Allen. The TufTab can be dropped onto concrete from up to four feet and keep ticking. It’s [...]

Intel’s showing its latest notebook design concept here at IDF 2009. It features not one, not two, but THREE mini touch-enabled displays in addition to a primary 15.4-inch display. The three displays above the keyboard are seen as one wide display by Windows. You can keep tabs on your content in one of the three [...]
Lenovo’s offering the ThinkPad T400s with multi-touch for $1,799.10 after a $166 discount and a 10% coupon. At this price the Thinkpad T400s comes with a 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, 2GB of RAM and a 120GB hard drive. Visit LogicBuy for more details and the coupon code.

I got a chance to play with the Viliv S10 Blade at IDF 2009 and shot a quick hands-on video. It has a high-resolution 10″ resistive touch screen, up to 64GB SSD and a 1.33GHz Intel Atom processor. Perhaps the most impressive thing about this is the 10-hour claimed battery life with the standard battery. [...]

Courier may be the top tablet story of the day, but it’s not alone. Straight from TabletKiosk comes the announcement of two new UMPCs featuring dual-mode pen+touch digitizers and Intel Atom processors. Shipping in October, the eo a7330D and eo TufTab a7230XD are being billed as “the only 7-inch Ultra-Mobile PCs to feature an auto-switching [...]

Everyone is justifiably excited by Courier, the new Tablet concept that is all over the Internet. As we, and many others have pointed out this looks like it sprang from the mind of Ken Hinckley of Microsoft Research and his Codex project, featuring two OQO’s bound together by a case. Ken is famous in Tablet [...]
