Samsung was really cautious about calling its Slider 7 a PC, netbook, or even tablet at the Consumer Electronics Show where the company had a huge presence. The device offers a sliding and tilting screen–an industrial design that HTC had helped to pioneer with its dual-boot Windows HTC Shift tablet–and with internal netbook components–such as [...]

Research in Motion had a busy and productive week at CES and the company had finally unleashed its PlayBook tablets to the grubby hands of the masses to play, experience and enjoy. The company says that its PlayBook will be running on the BlackBerry Tablet Operating System, which is powered by QNX. QNX, known for [...]

Viliv was at CES and in addition to showing off two Android slates, the company also demoed the X70 Windows 7 tablet, which is similar in spec to the Android models in offering a thin, attractive design and long battery life in between recharges. Viliv is boasting the X70 as the thinnest and lightest Windows-based [...]

Viliv was showing off its wares at the Consumer Electronics Show and we had some time with the Android-based tablets, which the company is boasting as having the longest battery life on an Android slate device. There will be two models, the X7 and X10, both of which offer similar specs and experiences except the [...]

Those who follow Apple’s smartphone beat know that the GSM iPhone has enjoyed an annual refresh every summer around the June-July time-frame. It’s dubious if Verizon’s iPhone will follow the same refresh cycle, or if increased iPhone demand in the U.S. through a multi-carrier offering would force Apple to stagger the refresh cycles between the [...]

Is Google really messing up on its naming convention? With Android 2.3 dubbed Gingerbread, and 3.0 headed towards the next alphabetical letter, H, with Honeycomb, I with Ice Cream may be jumping back to the 2.x numerical convention rather than flowing with 3.x convention according to Pocket-lint. The site had reported that Android 2.4 Ice [...]

So the moment you’ve been waiting for has finally arrived: the iPhone has come to the Verizon network. But was it worth the wait, or would you be better off waiting some more? Here are some points to consider based on what we’ve learned today:

Well, whether or not it was (as previously implied by Verizon’s CEO) an important element in bringing the iPhone to Verizon is unknown, but it has been confirmed the iPhone 4 will not be an LTE device.

Update: Though it looks like the lower left hand seam is similar to the AT&T iPhone 4, the antenna is slightly updated. You can sea a second seam on the upper left hand on the CDMA Verizon iPhone 4 that wasn’t present on the GSM AT&T model as posted by Engadget. Verizon’s 4G LTE network [...]

Engadget’s in New York and covering the Verizon event where Verizon has just announced its version of the iPhone 4, as rumors had dictated. We’ll be bringing you more news as we learn, but it’s now official! “Late in 2010 we started offering the iPad… today, we are extremely gratified to announce that the iPhone [...]

The HTC Freestyle is a phone with a well-made design by HTC made for AT&T, which runs the Brew MP platform rather than the Android or Windows Phone 7 OS. As a phone, the Freestyle really goes freestyle and does its own thing rather than going with a conventional smartphone operating system. That said, the [...]

Last week in the middle of CES 2011, we posted about a new gadget Buy Back program coming from Best Buy. It sounded like a good deal when we posted what we knew. Now the program is official, and the deal doesn’t sound quite so reasonable. In essence, you have to buy-in to the Best [...]

Ouch. I’ve been expecting a move like this somewhere, sometime and it looks like it is here. At least in Great Britain. On February 1 T-Mobile will impose a 500MB “fair use” limit on streaming or downloading video on mobile users. (Don’t confuse the phrase “fair use” here with how it is used when talking [...]

Congratulations appear to be in order around the virtual halls of GBM today. Mr. GBM and Mr. Notebooks.com, Xavier Lanier, was just re-awarded the honor of being a Microsoft MVP in the area of Touch/Tablet. I do believe that this is the second year Microsoft has recognized Xavier’s keen insights with the award. That keeps [...]

As I mentioned earlier, I was really looking forward to using my Sierra Wireless Overdrive to cover CES 2011. Unfortunately, the experience was almost a complete bust. My 4G connection was up and down like a YoYo. By the second day of the show I was tired of how unpredictable it was and started signing [...]

Baffling some less imaginative folks is news that the Motorola Xoom tablet will feature a barometer (reported earlier but the baffling is recent). This pressure measuring instrument is typically associated with weather detection, but there’s an application of the technology that could be more useful to some people: auto-switching to flight mode.

A YouTube video from The Associated Press shows an HTC phone battery deformed from where it blocked a bullet from entering its owner’s chest. The man’s life was saved, but sadly the heroic phone was not. Please send tweets in lieu of flowers.

Reports are that Verizon will be a having a big press even on Tuesday, possibly with Steve Jobs on hand, to help introduce a new Verizon iPhone. That is exciting news for many users who might hate AT&T or need to keep a family plan at Verizon due to other contract dates. In any event, [...]

CES 2011 is done and the Tabletalozza, or whatever the tech press was calling it. still leaves us with more questions than it does answers. Surprised? You shouldn’t be. Already this morning I’ve seen lists of Tablets to be on the lookout for published all over the Internet. Engadget has one and Kevin Tofel has [...]

This morning, Evernote grabbed me with this headline: Mac App Store more than doubles new users. I assumed that meant their rate of new users of their Mac software doubled, which is a strong accomplishment, but then I clicked through to discover it’s not Mac only – it’s across all platforms!

CES is over and the nominations for Freescale’s top 20 Smart Mobile Device Pundits of 2011 are in. Holding up the bottom of the list once again (because it’s in alphabetic order by first name) is our resident curmudgeon sage Warner Crocker.

I’m in the middle of writing a new play that we’ll debut at Wayside Theatre at the end of the month. As I’ve been working with my collaborator, composer and arranger Steve Przybylski, we go back and forth sending each other drafts, outlines, sketches, etc… We do some of this via email and some of [...]

While everyone feels pretty confident Verizon will announce on Tuesday that they will be getting the iPhone, one point up for contention is whether it will run on the newly launched 4G LTE network. I don’t know why. Verizon’s CEO already practically said it would.

As I was traveling (and preparing to travel) home from the Great Chicago Pilgrimage and CES 2011 was breaking up, Verizon popped out an invitation to an event scheduled for Tuesday, January 11 in New York City. That opened the floodgates of Verizon iPhone talk and since that time, and well, I’m sure you’ve read [...]

Verizon Wireless had a major press event at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, re-affirming its commitment to a strong, rapidly deploying LTE network with downlink speeds of 5-12 Mbps (actual speeds for me ranged between 12-16 Mbps) and uplink speeds of 2-5 Mbps. The carrier had also announced 10 new devices with 4G [...]

Blazing fast speeds and modest promises help to boost Verizon Wireless’s claim that it is the fastest, most advanced 4G network in America. At its 4G LTE press conference, Verizon Wireless was modest about boasting about its 4G network. The carrier says that it is on track or even ahead of schedule in its network [...]

Sharp’s Galapagos brand e-reader tablet comes in two different different screen sizes: 5.5- and 10.8-inch. Sharp isn’t disclosing what operating system the tablets were running at CES, but the company did give us a demo of the 5.5-inch version on video at the show. The device has a 3D-cube user interface, a trackball for navigating, [...]

While our pals at Notebooks.com did a video comparing the Lenovo laptop with the Lenovo Enhanced Experience and rapid boot feature to the fast-booting MacBook Air, in which Lenovo took top honors and claimed glory, Samsung was out at CES promoting its own QX412 notebook for a boot-up time of just 3 seconds for the [...]

CES 2011 is winding down in Las Vega and the annual Great Chicago Pilgrimage is also coming to a close as my wife and I prepare to drive back to Virginia Saturday. As I mentioned, what coverage I was able to provide for CES 2011 was done from afar. My schedule with family and the [...]

While AT&T in the States has yet to launch LTE 4G–the carrier is first rolling out 4G in the form of HSPA+ devices–Samsung is claiming to have the world’s first 3G HSPA and 4G LTE dual-mode netbook in the form of the SAmsung NF310. We say the 10.1-inch HD LED netbook on display at the [...]

With smartphones already replacing stand-alone GPS units, digital cameras, low-cost digital video cameras, PDAs, and other peripherals as those functions are now good enough and well integrated into a smartphone to use, LG is hoping to take that further and have users replace their home video game console systems with its powerful NVIDIA dual-core gigahertz [...]

We were able to go hands-on with the newly announced Sony Ericsson XPERIA Arc Android smartphone at CES. The Androdi 2.3 Gingerbread phone is the most current version of Android, which is quite a relief considering that previous XPERIA Android smartphones had launched with a stale version of the Google mobile OS with promises for [...]

I was excited to hear that Sharp would be bringing its Galapagos line of smartphones to the U.S. market, and at CES we were able to get a hands-on demo to see what the fuss was all about with the glasses-free 3D experience. I came away pretty impressed, as users of the Galapagos glasses-free 3D [...]

Earlier at the Consumer Electronics Show, Samsung had announced a thin and light ultra-portable professional notebook running on Microsoft’s Windows 7 OS that will give the OS X MacBook Air a run for its money. The 9 Series ultra-portable class from Samsung will come in either an 11.6- or 13.3-inch screen size, challenging the similar-spec’ed [...]

While at CES 2011 looking up notebooks and laptops for Notebooks.com I’ve been using Evernote more than normal on my Android device and it’s proven to be an incredible tool, but the upload process on Android has given me a scare on multiple occasions. The latest Evernote upgrade for Android brought about many improvements and [...]
