According to several readers who placed an order for the Nexus 4 on Tuesday, Google has begun sending out emails indicating that it oversold the device and that their shipment is now on backorder.
Nexus 4 pre-orderers have indicated to us that their orders for the Nexus 4, at least one of which was placed yesterday, is now on backorder due to the overwhelming demand that Google saw on Tuesday. Google’s website was up and down all morning after the launch of the Nexus 4, Nexus 10 and Nexus 7 HSPA+ and it appears that a few of those that placed an order that day won’t be seeing their device for a few weeks.
The email suggests that Nexus 4’s that are backordered are expected to be shipping out in three weeks though no specific date was given by Google in the email. The company says that it will be notifying users who placed Nexus 4 orders about when their shipments head out. Google also gives users a way to cancel their order if three weeks of a wait isn’t up to snuff.
Here is the email in full:
Thank you for your recent purchase on Google Play. Due to overwhelming demand, your Nexus 4 is on backorder and is expected to ship within three weeks. We’ll send you a notification when your order has shipped and will credit the shipping charges.

We’re also hearing from several users who say that their order is still “Pending.” We imagine that that could mean that orders with that status will be placed on backorder as well though that remains unconfirmed.
It’s unclear just how many of those who ordered earlier this week are affected but we imagine there are quite a few given the hiccups that Google’s site experienced that day. The Nexus 4 was flickering in and out of stock the entire morning of the launch with many users finding “success” after refreshing the page numerous times in order to get the “Add to Cart” button to appear.
Later in the day, Google’s website finally revealed the devices, both the 8GB and 16GB Nexus 4, to be sold out and users were no longer able to place orders.
Earlier today, those who ordered early were notified that their Nexus 4 orders had shipped out and they were supplied with a UPS tracking number to follow the progress of those shipments.
Google is no longer taking orders for the Nexus 4 and says that regions where the device is sold out, which is virtually everywhere, will see supply replenished in the coming weeks. We imagine that those who are on backorder will get first dibs on that new stock however so it could be much longer before we see stock come back on the Google Play Store.
